Junior Faculty

We support junior faculty in their professional development as they build their scholarly and teaching careers at the University of Oklahoma. We work with department chairs and directors to ensure that junior faculty members receive ongoing advice and mentorship regarding their professional paths, plans, and academic progress. We partner with academic units to offer junior faculty professional development opportunities in teaching and research. We also provide a tenure and promotion (T&P) workshop to help them understand the T&P process, timelines, institutional guidelines, and preparation of dossiers.

Faculty at the University of Oklahoma are expected to engage in three primary activities:

1) Engage in research / scholarship / creative activity
2) Instruct courses
3) Provide service to the institution and beyond the University

The Center for Research Program Development and Enrichment (CRPDE) is dedicated to assisting faculty in their efforts to become successful researchers / scholars / artists and/or instructors.

Maintaining a dynamic and up-to-date research/scholarship plan can allow faculty to develop a career trajectory that aligns professional goals, teaching, and work-life balance. In addition, CRPDE also provides workshops on a number of topics pertinent to junior faculty, including research project idea development, scaling research ideas, research funding planning, understanding external funding agencies and internal funding resources, increasing research competitiveness, removing barriers to successful scholarship and the like.

The iRep Program walks faculty through the development of an individualized Research Plan with the goal of developing a dynamic and creative path for faculty to align their activities with professional goals, research/scholarship/creative activity, teaching, service, and work-life balance.

Tenured Faculty

At any institution, the tenured faculty create a stable core of expertise and commitment to the long-term success of the institution. They form a bridge between faculty generations by mentoring new colleagues and assuming leadership roles when their senior colleagues move toward retirement. They help foster collegial relationships across disciplines and reinforce a faculty culture that brings together the scholarship of teaching and research.

As OU moves forward in a time of continuous change in higher education, it is important to foster continued renewal and growth of the tenured faculty.  In other words, tenured faculty’s continued renewal and growth is the keystone of the academic enterprise at OU.

Mid-Career Faculty

Congratulations for earning tenure and promotion to associate professor! As a mid-career faculty member, you have proven yourself to be a valuable asset to the University and to the profession. After getting tenure, you might feel that you can finally begin to take charge of your own fate. However, many mid-career faculty often experience one or both of the following stages.

  • You have achieved a certain level of professional maturity; therefore, you can easily reach a plateau where your professional goals are less clear.
  • In addition to your already full workload, you are expected to take on additional responsibility, be it assuming administrative tasks, heading up initiatives, and doing more service.

Faculty Development at OU strives to provide professional development opportunities to inspire you to expand your professional horizons. If you want to try new teaching strategies and technological applications, you are encouraged to work with the Center for Teaching Excellence. If you aspire to assume a leadership role, you may want to join the Faculty Leadership Academy. If you want to lead a study abroad program/course, OU has one of the best Study Abroad programs in the nation. If you would like to pursue a new or renewed line of scholarship, the Center for Research Program Development and Enrichment (CRPED) can provide consultations that lead to external funding and peer collaboration. If you want to connect to students, the Faculty-in-Residence (FIR) is a great gateway.

These are only a few snapshots of opportunities on campus. We strive to make strategic connections across campus and beyond the University to enrich your post-tenure career development.

Post-Tenure Review

Post-tenure review is required of all tenured faculty at an interval of five years. Each tenured faculty member undergoes a cumulative performance review every five years after which the faculty member was awarded tenure and/or promotion. Post-tenure review is an opportunity for the faculty member to assess overall performance in the last five years and discuss plans for the next five-year period. Furthermore, the post-tenure review committee has an opportunity to assess the faculty member’s performance and provides valuable feedback to the faculty member.
