Faculty Ally Training

Faculty Ally is a three-hour training program that targets Faculty and Graduate Teaching Assistants in an effort to enhance the learning environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer students. Allies can create inclusive classrooms where LGBTQ students feel safe to learn free from bias and homonegativity. Issues of bias come up in the classroom setting; this training can help prepare faculty for those eventualities and provide tools for dealing with difficult and sensitive issues. By creating a classroom dynamic that is inclusive, students are more open to discussion and a synergetic exchange of ideas. Talking about diversity issues in college helps prepare students for life after OU.

The program started in the fall of 2011 and is a joint effort between the Gender + Equality Center and the OU Writing Center.

  • Over 300 Faculty and GTA’s have already attended training, representing 50 colleges, departments or schools across campus.
  • The training is free and open to any OU faculty or GTA.
  • Topics covered in the training include: interrupting bias in the classroom, ways to create an inclusive classroom and creative approaches to include LGBTQ content into the curriculum.
